The Northcliffe

The Northcliffe is a historically sensitive reinterpretation of the former headquarters and print works of the Daily Mail newspaper located in the heart of the City of London. Originally a cutting-edge print and production facility, this refurbishment combines heritage features with future-focused design, such as the diagonal timber ceiling that makes a statement on arrival. JRA’s redesign preserves the Grade II Listed façade of the original 1920s building, and expands the interior to offer 186,700 sq ft of office space centred around a beutifully reimagined atrium.

COEXPERTISE

PROJECT LEAD: RACHEL BULL

The large reception lobby, lounge areas and meeting room were designed with a 1920s influence. Coexistence worked closely with JRA and the client to put together the FF&E specification, which included a large custom Manuscrit rug by Nanimarquina that pays tribute to the heritage of the building.

Coexistence also provided consultancy to produce an accessory schedule to fill the space as there were a lot of joinery elements which needed to be filled, as well as giving character to the rest of the space. Once the accessories had been sourced, we then spent time on site to style and curate the space. It was really rewarding to be part of the project from start to finish and to see the space come together with the finishing touches.

Most of the standout furniture pieces were from Knoll – the Florence Knoll Bench, a marble topped credenza, and the Barcelona Couch in a beautiful Bauhaus green leather, with a few Saarinen side tables in Verde Alpi marble. Other items include the Boomerang and Margas lounge chairs by &Tradition, the Bibendum chairs by Eileen Grey, the Grand Prix by Fritz Hansen, a custom meeting room table by Modus, and cognac leather Bernard chairs by Hay. The Hay Palissade collection was also used for the roof terrace.

JRA’s design achieved BREEAM ‘Outstanding,’ which only 1% of refurbished buildings have achieved to date, and the project exceeds RIBA’s 2030 embodied energy emissions targets.
